So you may or may not have heard Microsoft have decided to give Windows 10 away for free, kinda... If you have a computer with Windows 7 or Windows 8, then yes you can receive a free copy of the Windows 10 software when it is released on at the end of July 2015. By now you may have noticed an icon in the bottom right corner offering preregistration for the upgrade, simply fill in the form and pass your email address and you're in, soon after launch you will be given the chance to upgrade through Windows update.
So what's the downside? Well free is free, so there is not any downside so to speak, assuming you qualify for the upgrade, if you don't the current pricing is around $110 (£70) for the home edition and $200 (£145) for the professional/ultimate edition.

One thing worth remembering however is we don't know how stable windows 10 is going to be on launch so its going to be a wise move not to upgrade on day one. And the free upgrade offer is not indefinite you have a year from launch date to sign up and complete the upgrade. Im thinking somewhere after about the 3 month mark should be the sweet spot for those looking to make the leap. |
So now we know you can upgrade, the question is, should you? If your using Windows 8 and currently missing the start menu functionality then that alone may be enough to make you want to upgrade. If your using windows 7 then you will be happy to know Windows 10 will come with all the things in Windows 8 that we all disable first chance we get so yeah... Hay its a round number! Its worth noting that Windows 10 is also planned to be rolled out to the Xbox one, unsure at the moment how much of a cut down version this will be, but it does open the door for a more cross platform gaming world, when PC and console users can finally play together? Purely speculation of course but if that is the case it be interesting to see Sony's response. If you like the idea of a free Windows 10 upgrade but don't fancy doing it yourself you can always call us to visit and complete the upgrade for you, since the upgrade is free there is only the call out cost incurred at just £35. Perhaps if you're having other software issues like a slow running system could use this as a two birds one call out fix. |
